Abstract

New NIR surveys of large parts of the sky (DENIS and 2MASS) will greatly benefit our knowledge of Galactic structure and evolution. The extraction of included information may be done either by direct derivation of parameters from star counts or by using Galaxy models. This second approach has been shown to be very fruitful in analysing star counts and colour distributions in many directions at a time. Here we try to compare different galaxy models and the constraints which have been obtained from them on Galactic structure parameters and evolution history of the Galaxy and discuss the implications of new infrared surveys on our knowledge of the Milky Way.
