Abstract

In this contribution we want to stress the importance of near-infrared surveys in the study of star formation regions (SFRs), in particular in the investigation of stages preceding the formation of an HII region. The comparison between high-resolution near-infrared images and accurate tracers of the earliest evoltionary stages of an SFR such as water masers, high density molecular cores, molecular outflows, jets and ultra-compact HII regions has shown that, even in highly obscured regions, the newly formed stars can be located and correspond to near-infrared sources with a strong infrared excess. Most probably the near-infrared emission comes from the hot dust envelopes surrounding protostars. We show several ex-amples of selected SFRs studied in a “multi-wavelength” approach, and tentatively put them in an evoltionary sequence.
