The Deep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey (DENIS)

Progress status and scientific achievements

Abstract

Considerable changes are under way in the practice of observational astronomy due to the improvements of panoramic detectors, the increasing archiving capacity of computers and the acceleration of communication networks. The huge amounts of data produced by sky surveys from the ground and in space will eventually merge into a multiwavelength virtual sky, and in many cases, astronomers will make more efficient “observations” through their computer terminal accessing databases rather than at a telescope.
