Abstract

The vibrations of structures under moving loads have been investigated for almost 130 years. Bridges and viaducts were the first objects of research in this field, as cited in Inglis (1934) and Schallenkamp (1937). The fast development of guideway systems for robotic devices and high speed vehicles needs more and more exact results of calculations for this phenomenon (Popp, 1979). Modern light-weight guideway structures are, on the one hand, more sensitive to vibrations, and on the other hand, are expected to realise precise straight-line motions for the tools or vehicles, they carry. In order to reconcile these two opposites, active control is used and applied in various ways, depending on particular cases.
