Abstract
Technology policies are of a crucial importance for the adaptation of production systems to structural change. However, the aim of such policies and the incentives that are traducing these policies in concrete terms highly depend on national characteristics and specificities. In this contribution, we discuss the role and the importance of science parks (or technopolises) within the French technological support. French research, innovation, and technology policies have long been very centralised and concentrated on some key actors, namely large companies. Over the past couple of decades, significant changes have occurred which need to be taken into account. The technopolis phenomenon provides an illustration of these changes; its diversity attests to complex interaction between local, regional, and national policy-making to render public support more efficient. To some extent, the objective of this contribution is to discuss the importance of these specific projects of local development regarding this national evolution.
