Abstract
‘Mobility’ and ‘multimedia’ are two of the most important aspects of modern telecommunications. Cellular mobile telephone networks have been around since the early 1980s, and still show enormous growth rates in terms of numbers of subscribers. For example, between early 1994 and early 1995, the number of people around the world connected to cellular mobile telephone networks rose from approximately 34 million to around 55 million. The demand for mobile telephony continues unabated as networks, services, tariffs and technology evolve. Projections of growth by Ericsson indicate that the number of mobile telephone users will increase to 350 million by the end of this century.
