Abstract
Hot hole lasers are presently the only table top devices that produce a tuneable output at frequencies from 1 to 4 THz. Therefore, they could play an important role in the design of a scheme to characterise active and passive circuits in this range of frequencies. They were first demonstrated more than 15 years ago [1] and several groups have worked on their development since. Still, they have not yet reached the maturity needed for applications in engineering. The present contribution considers their principles of operation, some problems that still inhibit their large scale use and present trends in development. It is by no means a review of work performed in the past and references will be restricted to specifically cited results. For review articles the reader is referred to a special issue of Optical and Quantum Electronics [2] and a new review article which is expected to appear shortly [3].
