Variability of Northwestern Black Sea Hydrography and River Discharges As Part of Global Ocean-Atmosphere Fluctuations

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASEN2,volume 27))

Abstract

Regional hydrological data sets of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute for 1950 – 1992 were used for the analysis of interannual and inter-decadal variability of temperature, salinity and density of seawater in the Northwest Black Sea. It was shown that high amplitude fluctuations of all fields occurred during the analysed period. These fluctuations are mainly due to the low-frequency changes of the river run-off in the Northwest Black Sea. The variability of the river discharges is the same as the typical amplitude of the seasonal cycle. They are mainly due to natural changes in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system over the globe.
