Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 212))

Abstract

Optical fibres have revolutionised observational astronomy over the past 17 years through the technique of multi-object spectroscopy. Ever since they were first used in 1979 at Steward Observatory (Hill et al. 1980) many observatories have built and used multi-fibre spectrographs because they are vital for many branches of astronomy requiring large spectroscopic samples. This paper reviews the use of optical fibres for multi-object spectroscopy in astronomy including a survey of multi-fibre facilities. A few important examples of scientific research carried out with multi-fibre spectrographs are also given and the future prospects for the technique are discussed. The uses of fibres for other astronomical applications such as high-precision radial velocity work or interferometry are not discussed.
