Abstract

I want to thank all the previous writers for their careful attention to my work, their several interpretations of my views, their generous comments on my efforts, and the incisive critical questions they have raised. I found all their papers instructive, and I have tried to respond appropriately, if only briefly, to their major concerns. I am deeply grateful to the editor, Harvey Siegel, and all the contributors for the opportunity they have afforded me to rethink views I have expressed on a variety of important issues over the years.
