Abstract

A colorectal polyp is a circumscribed mass of tissue that projects above the surface of the bowel mucosa1. A polyp is classified as pedunculated when there is a discrete stalk. In cases when there is broad contact between the head of the polyp and the colorectal mucosa the polyps are considered sessile. Polyps can cause intestinal bleeding and in rare cases bowel obstruction; most polyps, however, are asymptomatic. The main reason to remove polyps is their proved relationship with development of colorectal cancer2. Polyps can be divided into neoplastic (adenomas) and non-neoplastic forms. Only the adenomatous polyps have malignant potential and only these should be the target of polypectomy.
