Abstract
The role of the hydrological cycle in the Earth system is discussed through a review of papers related to paleohydrological processes in the glacial-interglacial cycle, the postglacial period, and the recent age of global warming, with emphasis on anthropogenic interactions with the hydrological cycle. The importance of solving appropriate “inverse problems” related to the hydrological cycle through field work is stressed.
