Glaciers and Snowcover in Central Asia as Indicators of Climate Change in the Earth-Ocean-Atmosphere System

Regional Hydrological Response to Climate Change

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 38))

Abstract

We propose a scheme of natural interactions in the earth-ocean-atmosphere system, where the seasonal snowcover of Eurasia serves as a possible regulator of circulation, and glaciers serve as indicators of global climate change. Standard hydrometeorological, expedition and satellite data collected since the 1890s are used to obtain quantitative estimates of presentday deviations of circulation indices, area covered by seasonal snow, and global air temperature. We estimate deviations of the mass-balance components for five mountainglacier systems in remote areas of central Asia.
