Abstract

In 1951, G.P. Kuiper postulated that the short-period comets originate from a disk of material lying beyond the orbit of Pluto and confined to the ecliptic. This proposal for the source of the comets of low inclination was contemporaneous with Jan Oort’s hypothesis of a spherical distribution of comets at much larger heliocentric distance that is the source of the long-period comets, which have an approximately random distribution of inclinations.
