Abstract
When a crack in a layer reaches an interface with another layer, it may be arrested or at least retarded by the phenomenon of debonding of the interface and reinitiation of a new crack in the second layer. A Shear Lag analysis associated to Damage Mechanics gives closed form solutions for the crack arrest conditions or the number of cycles of fatigue to crack initiation which determines the retardation, as functions of the design parameters of multimaterials.
