Abstract
By working at high pressure and high temperature in the presence of silver oxide (AgO), that seems to act as oxidation agent, we have recently found a new superconducting family showing quite high critical temperatures
The general formula of the family is
and, up to now, four members with n = 3 to 6, have been observed by electron microscopy and diffraction. Although materials having carbonate ions in the CRL, that is oxocarbonate cuprates, are rather common, there are not that many examples of this mixed copper and carbon simultaneous occupation of the CRL.
In the as prepared materials, the n = 4 member of the family seems to have the highest Tc, while in all other HTSC series, irrespective of having one or two CRL, the n = 3 is the term with the highest Tc. Recent experiments show, however that, by adjusting the oxygen content, itis possible to increase the Tc of the n = 3 member up to almost 120 K, so that the same trend observed in the remaining families is also seen in here.
Increasing the synthesis pressure, we have obtained another, as yet unidentified phase with Tc = 126 K. We have also seen a very different behaviour of the critical temperature of the different members under pressure, where we have measured a transition onset of the order of 135 K for the last phase.
Some other substitutions have been attempted in the CRL and although one is able to either partly or totally replace Hg, no improvement in the superconducting critical temperature with respect to the full Hg ones has been achieved.
