Applications of High-Tc Superconductors

Abstract

This paper reviews the current status of technical applications of high-Tc superconductors. It will start by a brief overview over the whole spectrum of possible applications of superconductors and then discuss as a first central point the role of the critical current density Jc as the most important materials parameter for superconductor applications. In particular, the Jc limiting mechanisms which are most prominent in high-Tc materials, that is weak-link behaviour and flux creep, will be discussed as well as the various methods developed by now to reduce their detrimental effects. These methods are: preparation of the high-Tc material as thin epitaxial film, as melt-textured bulk material and as mechanically textured (powderin-tube) samples resulting in wafers, compact bodies and wires or tapes, respectively. Selected examples will be given to illustrate these various procedures.
