Abstract

The paper presents a theoretical study of the dielectric permittivity tensor of layered metals in the normal state. We focus our attention on plasma resonance in YBa2Cu3O7 crystals. Two characteristic plasma frequencies (for c-axis polarization and for polarization of the electric field in the a-b plane) are calculated. Within the effective-medium approximation for spheroids with the same symmetry as the conductivity tensor of the uniform uniaxial grains we discuss the room-temperature normal incidence reflectivity data of sintered YBa2Cu3O7 pellets. Measurements of reflectivity are reported in the optical range (1.73 eV ≤ ℏω ≤ 3.35 eV) of the electromagnetic spectrum.
