Abstract

The paper is concerned with electromagnetic waves scattering from random rough surfaces. The aim is to stress the role of the geometric features of the surface. An approximate expression of the scattering coefficient is used in order to show in a simple way how multicovariance functions, and their Fourier transforms or multispectra, are naturally introduced. It appears that particular forms and combinations of these functions (moments) are required that depend only on the distance between two points of the surface. The functions of lowest order are the correlation function, the skewness function and the peakedness function. Some properties of these functions are given and simple examples are discussed, depending on two parameters: an amplitude factor and a characteristic distance. Relationships are established between these distances and the wind speed for the case of the ocean surface.
