Abstract

An important contact mechanism in a cemented granular medium is stress transmission between deformable particles through deformable interparticle cement bonds. The results presented here are based on a solution to the problem of normal and shear deformation of two elastic cemented spherical particles bonded by elastic cement. Once a two-particle problem is solved, the effective deformational characteristics of a granular assembly are derived using standard statistical approaches. Contact cement, even if it is soft, acts to dramatically increase the effective elastic stiffness of a granular medium.
