Abstract

The Caspian Sea is in a closed basin in the inland part of Eurasia. The sea’s level is below that of the World Ocean. The sea basin stretches from north to south almost 1,200 km and its width varies between 200 and 450 km. The total length of the coastline is 7,000 km, and its water surface area is about 390,600 km2 (as of January 1993). Water salinity in the northern part is 3–6%o, and in the middle and southern parts it is 12%o. Territorially, the sea is located within the boundaries of Russia, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran (Fig. 1).
