Abstract

Over the past few years, the third IHDP Symposium (Geneva, August 1995), the IGBP’s Fourth Scientific Advisory Council (Beijing, October 1995) and First Congress (Bad Münstereifel, April 1996), and the workshop to launch an International Research Institute for climate prediction (Washington DC, November 1995), each made clear the crucial role of social science research in international research programs focused on the study of the physical and biogeochemical aspects of the Earth system.
