Abstract

Practical methods are needed to communicate information about the health and sustainability of ecosystems that are under increasing human pressure, and to evaluate choices from the combined perspectives of science, society, and management. Ecological characterization is an established approach that may be enhanced to meet these evolving needs. This chapter discusses the concept and content of ecological characterization, focusing selectively on improvements in the production and application of its resulting information products.
