Photoinduced Effects in Amorphous Chalcogenides

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASHT,volume 36))

Abstract

New results of the study of photoinduced effects in amorphous chalcogenide layers and glasses are reviewed. The main accent is given to the changes of short range order, to the mechanisms of optically induced effects, to the optically induced changes of reactivity of chalcogenide layers. Both irreversible and reversible effects are discussed. Attention is paid also to different materials in which the photoinduced effects were studied recently.

The study of Roman and IR spectra revealed the changes of short range order inAs-S layers not only for irreversible but also for reversible photoinduced changes.

The exposed and unexposed parts of the surface attract some organic sorbats in different way and, as a result, the dissolution rates of layers in alkaline solutions are strongly changed. It is concluded that the As-rich parts of As-S layers are responsible for increased sorption of the adsorbats

The review stems from the results of authors' group and covers also the other groups' main results published recently.

Besides the basic importance of the results of the interaction of amorphous solids with radiation and light, the photoinduced changes of structure and properties can be applied in high resolution litography, for prepation of optical memories, photoresists, optical diffraction elements, planar optoelectric parts and circuits. Some of these applications are also mentioned.
