Abstract

During the last few years Histocompatibility Laboratories have started to use DNA techniques. There are many benefits to using such techniques. There is no need for antisera, which are becoming very difficult to obtain as many laboratories have stopped screening for HLA reagents and few laboratories have the technology to produce specific HLA monoclonal antibodies. The DNA methods have proven more accurate and the degree of resolution required, which is much higher than that of serology, can be chosen. The cost is much less. In this laboratory the total cost of reagents for a HLA-A,-B type by sequence specific oligonucleotide probes (SSOP) is 12 US dollars.
