Abstract

Magnetic hysteretic behavior of a system composed of oriented crystallites of Mn12-acetate complex were investigated as a function of temperature, and the directions of external magnetic field. Periodic magnetization steps were observed in the hysteresis loops. These steps suggest the existence of peaks in the relaxation rate at the fields corresponding to the jumps, which has been confirmed by the relaxation experiments performed with these fields at different temperatures. We attribute these observations to thermally assisted resonant tunneling of the magnetic moment the cluster in a double well potential, and propose a theoretical model to account for our results.
