Abstract
Since the late 1970s, extensive research into fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) laminated products has been taking place in Japan, Germany and Switzerland, exploring the possible use of FRP sheets in the rehabilitation and upgrading of bridges and structures. In the late 1980s, these efforts gained increased interest in Canada and the United States because of the continent’s decaying infrastructure. It is estimated (Klaiber et al., 1987) that, in the US alone, approximately 170,000 bridges need to be replaced by the year 2005. In Canada, this figure stands at approximately 8,000 bridges (Bickley et al., 1993). The enormous cost associated with a task of this magnitude could be substantially reduced with new rehabilitation technologies.
