Abstract
Coaxial jets are present in several practical applications, especially in the field of combustion, where the problem of mixing is largely controlled by the flow dynamics. This has motivated many studies on isothermal coaxial jets, principally in the homogeneous case (Champagne and Wygnanski 1971, Kwan and Ko 1976, Au and Ko 1987, Dahm et al 1992). On the contrary, very few studies have considered the effects of density on these flows. Gladnick et al (1990) investigated the velocity and concentration fields in an axisymmetric jet flow of CFC-12 issuing into a coannular jet flow of air (density ratio: 0.26). They found an increase of mixing with increasing velocity ratio (limited to 2 in their study). This was attributed to the presence of annular vortex rings originating in the mixing layer between the jet and coannular flows.
