Abstract
The bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (P.s. pv, phaseolicola), is the only proven producer of phaseoiotoxin, a potent inhibitor of the enzyme ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCTase). Phaseoiotoxin production and autoimmunity are genetically controlled by the chromosomal tox-argK gene cluster. To better characterize the physical structure, functional organization, and phylogenetic origin of this cluster, (f) we determined the location of its structural borders in reference to Pseudomonas syringae pv. giycinea’s genome, and (H) cloned a 38 Kb Kpnl chromosomal fragment that contains the entire cluster plus adjacent regions and enables Escherichia coli (E. coli) to produce phaseoiotoxin.
