Abstract
The question of ‘output’ is a good place to start in considering an activity. The quality of mathematics education is important for the future social and economic strengths of our countries. We are also all interested, for example as taxpayers, in the output of activities which are publicly funded. How should we judge this? The Washington conference was meant to discuss the value of research in mathematical education. But can we give reasonable expectations for research in mathematical education if we do not know what we can reasonably want from mathematical education itself? Otherwise, it might even be suggested that an aim of a conference on research in mathematical education is to improve the status of the research and of the researchers.
