Abstract

The Bornhöved Lake District, selected by means of comparative geostatistics as a core area of the German ecosystem research network (TERN), is situated some 30 km south of Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein) and covers about 50 km2 of interrelated drainage basins. The area is characterised by moraines of the Weichselian Pleniglacial with intercalated outwash sediments including käme deposits, dead-ice depressions with lakes, fens, or wetlands, and Late Saalian moraines in the south. The assemblage thus combines the essential geomorphic features of northern Germany, which ensures a high degree of spatial representativeness of the results obtained from this research.
