Abstract
Injudicious use of antibiotics escalates the cost of stone treatment, besides encouraging the development of resistant strains of bacteria, which then require third generation antibiotics for eradication. A course of injectable, third generation cephalosporins for seven days (US$ 210) may cost approximately a third of the cost of lithotripsy (US$ 500–600). Injectable antibiotics sometimes require admission, because of the lack of domiciliary services, which further add to the costs.
