Abstract

Renewed interest in the relationship between finance and growth has yielded a large volume of evidence that financial-sector development contributes significantly to economic growth. Structural characteristics, such as the degree of competition in the banking sector and the legal and regulatory environment underpinning the financial sector, are important factors in this relationship. Hence, attention must turn toward ensuring that the appropriate financial infrastructure is in place to support the development of an efficient financial system.
