Abstract

It is rare to find a family with sufficient a scientific following to merit its own series of symposia. The Littorinidae are cosmopolitan, accessible, extremely abundant and exhibit wide ranges of morphs and colours; properties that are probably the source of their interest to amateur naturalists and scientists alike. The comparative wealth of knowledge of this family is due in no small part to the co-operation and collaboration that exists between littorinid biologists and the Fifth International Symposium on Littorinid Biology at Cork provided a further opportunity for discussion and exchange of current littorinid research. Attendance has grown with every symposium in this series and now, it would seem, there are more littorinid biologists than ever before.
