Abstract
Chemical weapons are being destroyed by incineration at two storage sites in the USA; the process is referred to as the “base-line technology”. Several alternatives are being investigated. Two are at a relatively advanced stage and will be used, one for destroying VX (Nerve Agent) and the other for HD (Mustard). Both are multi-step processes in which the chemical agent is first detoxified (neutralized) and then treated further to produce products suitable for discharge. These two processes will be examined in this paper, and their products compared with those of the base-line technology.
