Abstract

Greece is a bryologically scarcely explored area. Even in the more investigated parts of the country plenty of new records can be explored. The present study deals with the aquatic and riparian bryophyte vegetation of two mountain streams in Greece in correlation with water quality. Studies on the bioindication role of bryophytes in aquatic environment started in several countries in the mid-seventies. Several publications contain data on water quality indications (saprobity) of bryophytes (Frahm 1974, Empain 1973, 1978, Penuelas & Sabater 1987, Vrhovšek et al. 1984, 1985).
