Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to estimate the productivity and nitrogen fixing capability of Acacia saligna inoculated by two different inoculum types. The effect of adding phosphorus on plant performance and the amount of fixed nitrogen also were estimated. Twenty-eight weeks after transplantation, plants were harvested and plant dry weights were determined. Plant tissue was analysed for N concentration, and the amount of fixed nitrogen was calculated using the difference method. Inoculation resulted in a significant increase in biomass productivity of Acacia saligna seedlings. The addition of a low dose of phosphorus also resulted in a significant increase in plant biomass. Differences were observed in the amount of fixed nitrogen estimated for each inoculum type. The addition of phosphorus significantly enhanced the estimated amount of N2 fixed per plant, inoculated either by pure culture or by crushed nodule suspension. A linear relationship was found between the amount of fixed nitrogen and total nitrogen content.
