Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate possible links between economic growth and the environment. Many scientists and other critics have been arguing since the mid-1960s that continuing economic growth in developed industrial nations is leading to a depletion of resources and increasing destruction of the environment. The appearance of criticism at that particular time was connected with the rapid economic growth of the 1950s and 60s and with the fact that large parts of the population of North America and western Europe had attained a relatively high material standard of living.
