Abstract
In this paper I shall try to describe formally, in the simplest possible way, the role information plays in decision-making. Intuitively, this is rather well known from everyday experience. We all look for information when we face a decision problem, particulary if the decision is both important and difficult. In most cases, we know how to use that information and how to appraise its value in terms of the improvement it brings into our decision making. The definitions below seem, therefore, to be based on firm ground. Nevertheless, a few words of explanation might help to avoid misunderstanding as to the purpose of the present paper. Information, if the word is taken in a broad sense, enters the process of decision making in more than one way. Some of them lend themselves to formal treatment, whereas others have not been formalized so far and it is even doubtful that they ever will.
