Abstract

During the last few decades, philosophy of science has steadily grown in importance. This is due to many factors, not the least of them being the increasing importance of science itself. Another stimulus has been the belief, shared by many people, that the main business of philosophy is to investigate the sources and validity of knowledge, and that the only genuine knowledge is that provided by science. There is, also, the awareness that philosophy of science is needed, both by the scientist and by the layman who both want to know what are the grounds on which science asserts what it does.
