Abstract
We present an analytical model for the intrinsic evolution of extra-galactic radio sources. The model predicts self-similar expansion of the source and is in excellent agreement with observations. The observed divide between FRI and FRII type sources is reproduced. Evolutionary tracks through the P-D diagram for FRII sources are calculated. The details of the evolution of the magnetic field in the cocoon are shown to have no significant influence on these tracks. Effects of different redshifts, environments and jet parameters on the tracks are studied and some evidence against protons in the jet is found.
