Abstract

Primordial CMB imprints (Doppler and Sachs-Wolfe) are discussed, with emphasis on how these imprints constrain Ω and H 0 as well as the history of the formation of large-scale structure. This review also covers Sunyaev-Zel’dovich secondary imprinting, stressing how this can allow detection of ionised structures at high redshift that are otherwise invisible. The challenges of CMB imaging are addressed, the two standard observing strategies — beam-switching and interferometry — are compared, and the recent, very rapid progress in CMB astronomy assessed.
