Abstract

Popocatepetl (5,450m) is located in the center of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (19°03′N, 98°35′W), and Citlaltepetl or Pico de Orizaba (5,700m) is located on the eastern edge of the Belt (19°01′N, 97°16′W) (Fig.1). They are the two highest strato-volcanoes in Mexico and the only ones that are active and have glaciers on their slopes. These characteristics make them a high risk area for lahar formation and other geomorphologie processes, so it is very important that the glaciers be monitored.
