Abstract

Heterogeneity is a major characteristic of many building materials since it has a great influence on their mechanical response, particularly when failure is concerned. The failure in concrete or timber components is often regarded as a random event, difficult to predict. The wide scatter in results is the first reason for the development of semi-probabilistic approaches in european building rules (Eurocodes). However, a careful investigation of the material microstructure can provide information on what happens during failure. It can also make the engineer capable of predicting the failure response of structural elements, being assumed he has enough a priori data on the component.
