Abstract

The following natural and man-made sources of radiation are the most significant in the Urals:

  1. (1)

    A high concentration of natural radionuclides (isotopes of the 238U and 232Th decay chains) in the environment;

  2. (2)

    Poor management of low-level radioactive wastes;

  3. (3)

    Testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere and underground peaceful explosions;

  4. (4)

    The production of radioactive materials for military use and the fabrication of nuclear weapons
