Abstract
M. Sheena Symington discussed air pollutant concentrations in Canada over the period 1974–1994. The national average annual mean airborne concentration of lead (Pb) has been reduced from 0.69 µg/m3 in 1974 to 0.01 .µg/m3 in 1994. Total suspended particle concentrations have decreased from 78 to 34 µg/m3 over this same period, while sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations have been reduced from 13 ppb to 5 ppb. This reduction in SO2 has been accompanied by a dramatic decrease in cations such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium (Mg, Ca, and K) which has reduced the neutralizing capacities of ecosystems.
