Abstract

A large number of catalyst systems are known to initiate the metathesis of olefins [1]. Transition metal carbenes formed in these systems trigger the transalkylidenation reaction. This carbene mechanism is well documented and accepted by now: olefin coordination to the complex carbene leads to a metalla-cyclobutane which rearranges to a new olefin and a new metalla-carbene [2] (Scheme 1).
