Formation of Hydrocarbon and Functionalized Polymers by Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET) Polymerization

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 506))

Abstract

Metathesis polymerization has been a subject of active research for well more than 30 years now. Polymerization can either occur by ring opening reactions (ROMP) or by acyclic diene metathesis polymerization (ADMET) as illustrated in Figure 1.1 ROMP polymerization is utilized commercially, predominately with dicyclopentadiene,2 while applications for a number of other polymers are being investigated. Millions of pounds of this thermoset polymer are made every year in the United States as well as in Japan. While ROMP polymerization is quite interesting, it is not being considered in this paper. Instead, the focus will be on ADMET polymerization and how it actually occurs.
