Urban Change and Institutional Adaptation

The Geographic Identity of the University of Miami

  • Chapter
The Urban University and its Identity

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 45))

Abstract

This chapter is a study of how the University of Miami (UM), as an institution of higher education, relates to its immediate local environment, defined as metropolitan Miami. More specifically, it addresses the question of how UM has responded or adjusted to the momentous changes that took place in this city over the past decades. These are broad questions that could be approached in a variety of ways. In this study, they are tackled from a specific angle: it discusses the University of Miami primarily in terms of its geographic identity.
