Abstract
The United Kingdom covers about 23.5 million ha, 78% of which is agricultural land (about 1.4 million ha). The agricultural sector consists of about 234 900 holdings and occupies around 533 000 people. The value of its agricultural production is a little over 24 million ECU. Farms are generally large, the average size being 72.4 ha. The number of holdings is fairly stable, but has been reduced by about 2.5% in the period 1990–1995. There is a tendency towards specialization and integration with agro-business firms (de Cooman et al., 1995).
